Repairing Your Industrial Gearboxes

For many companies an industrial gearbox is the pinnacle of operations and an essential part of the day to day workings of the firm. As such, gearbox maintenance and upkeep is crucial. Here we take a look at five useful tips for firms in need of industrial gearbox repairs and maintenance.

1. Oil Levels

Oil to a gearbox is akin to blood in a human; it is an absolutely essential feature that must be maintained to a high standard. Failure to keep oil levels topped up and in good quality will lead to gearbox overheating and serious damage to the gears and internal workings.

In addition to regularly checking oil levels and testing quality of oil in the gearbox, potential overheating should be consistently monitored. Thermal imaging cameras are the most effective tools for detecting overheating although simply spraying a small amount of cold water onto the gearbox will give an indication on imminent overheating problems.

2. A Professional Repair Company

Whilst prevention is better than a cure, it is almost inevitable that your company will require industrial gearbox repairs at some point during each gearboxes life cycle. As a gearbox is likely to be instrumental to your company’s operations, do not gamble by using unreliable firms.

Check testimonials from recent clients, ask about guarantees and ensure you understand exactly what you are paying for when employing third parties to repair your gearboxes.

3. Regular Inspections and Maintenance

Regularly inspecting your gearboxes is an essential part of prolonging their working lifespan. Ensure gearbox operators regularly check for signs of overheating and gearbox misalignment or risk serious damage to the machines.

By enforcing stringent, controlled measures and inspections on a shift by shift basis you can detect problems before they become serious and maximise the gearbox’s operational life.

4. Seals

After overheating, the failure of gearbox seals is arguably the most serious problem that can afflict a gearbox. Degradation of seals allows water and dust ingress, as well as leakage of oil. All three of these problems can pose a serious threat to the operation of your gearboxes.

5. External Coolers

Finally, consider hiring or investing in a set of external coolers, particularly if your gearboxes are being operated in warm or enclosed environments. The problems overheating can cause to gearboxes are difficult to over-exaggerate and steps to prevent it should always be taken. As has been mentioned already, preventing overheating is far more effective than stopping gearbox operation once it has already begun. Not only does prevention prolong gearbox lifespan, it reduces downtime and hence increases your company’s productivity.
