Choosing Pub Management As A Career




Pub management roles provide ambitious individuals with the responsibility of looking after a licensed property. Generally the individual will be responsible for the line management of pub staff and the ordering of stock for the establishment.

The number of pub manager jobs has decreased in recent years due to a high number of pubs closing as a result of the economic climate. Whilst the number of roles has decreased the job can still be viewed as a highly regarded career choice.

Before an individual takes on the responsibility of this kind of role they will have typically gained numerous years of experience within the pub industry. In some cases the role holder may have studied towards a qualification in catering or hospitality. The level of experience that a pub manager will hold before securing this role will vary between establishments, although in well known chained pubs there is often an expectation of a minimum of three years pub work experience.

In some cases the manager of a pub may also be the owner of the establishment; in such cases the individual will take on the role of being the manager and landlord or landlady.

Generally the key responsibility of the pub manager role is the management of the pub staff. The amount of staff varies throughout establishments and in many cases the workforce is made up of a number of part time employees. As there are often part time vacancies within pubs many students choose to apply for these roles; it should be noted that to serve alcohol within a pub without supervision there is a legal requirement to be over the age of eighteen.

As well the management of employees the role holder will also usually be responsible for the ordering of stock from suppliers. How often stock will be ordered will be dependent upon how busy the establishment is and whether food is served on the premises. The key item that will be ordered for a pub is alcoholic beverages and these will usually be ordered through a prearranged supplier.

In most cases the manager of a pub will also be responsible for the cashing up at the end of the evening. This task includes ensuring that the till contains the correct amount of takings and that customers have paid off all prearranged tabs.

The average salary in the UK for pub manager jobs is estimated to be around £24,000, although this could be significantly higher or lower depending on the location and type of establishment.

The job of managing a pub can be regarded as a highly motivating role where each day is different and it provides a high level of people interaction.
